What Is Wi-Fi

If you own a laptop computer you are probably familiar with the term “wi-fi.” This wireless internet protocol is a great option for getting online. You can get wireless internet anywhere you are located within range of a hotspot. What most people don’t realize though is that they can actually set up their own wi-fi hotspot in their homes. Setting up a wi-fi hotspot is a relatively easy process that doesn’t require you to shell out a ton of money or go through any tedious red tape.

What is Wi-Fi exactly? Wi-Fi is a form of wireless internet that utilizes Wi-Fi hot spots to connect devices with Wi-Fi hot spots to the central routers. The major difference between a regular network and a Wi-Fi network is that there is no centralized router, instead of all devices communicate with one another via ad-hoc networks. Ad-hoc networks are simply small groups of computers on a given network that are directly connected to each other and are not tied together by any type of service provider.

Why would you want to utilize a Wi-Fi hotspot though? There are many benefits to having your own hotspot. One benefit is that you can establish multiple connections within a short distance of one another. You might have an internet access point, laptop in your bed, and other wireless enabled devices in the same room. With a Wi-Fi router you can have access to five or more wireless devices without having to connect them all to your home broadband connection which can be a bit of a pain.

Another advantage to using a wireless hotspot is that it makes your internet even more accessible. A cellphone router may be fantastic but doesn’t really solve one of the biggest problems with mobile computing, which is battery consumption. It’s difficult to charge a laptop when you’re on the go, and unfortunately some newer cellular phones just don’t handle the juice. However, if you utilize a cell phone router as well as your home Wi-Fi then you can enjoy mobile computing even while you’re on the road.

One of the newest mobile technologies that has been introduced recently is Bluetooth. This technology was originally developed for mobile devices such as handheld computers. It allowed the exchange of data between these computers and various mobile devices without the use of a computer. Bluetooth also allowed users to take their personal devices such as their laptops with them wherever they went so they could stay in touch with their business associates or stay in touch with family friends who were traveling. When the wireless networking standards for Bluetooth were developed, it became possible for people to utilize this technology with a wireless hotspot for their homes.

One disadvantage to using radio waves to transfer information is interference. If you are within range of a wireless router then any radio waves that are transmitted can be picked up by your device and cause it to malfunction. This can either cause the information being transmitted to be useless or it might make it so glitchy that the information doesn’t actually get sent. With Bluetooth there is no form of interference because there is no radio waves being used. This means that there is no need for a traditional router or repeater, and therefore you don’t need to worry about making things complicated.

An alternative to Bluetooth technology is i-mode. This is exactly what it sounds like, an i-mode connection where you communicate with one device and only one device. With i-mode wireless networking the data and information that are being transferred is secure and private between you and the other party. In comparison to Bluetooth devices that require the use of a Bluetooth transceiver and active radio waves in order to communicate they are much easier to work with.

So now we know what Wi-Fi is itu-t just what is it? It is a great new technology that has changed how we connect to one another. We no longer need to worry about wireless routers and how complicated the whole thing can be. Now we can all hook up to our laptops, phones, tablets, television, and internet wirelessly all from the comfort of our own homes thanks to itu-t.
