What Is Weathering


If you are new to working with woodworking then you may not be too familiar with what is weathering. Weathering is basically the breakdown of materials, rocks, soils and other organic materials and tissues through direct contact with liquid and airborne gases, air, and even bacteria and fungi. The process is very important to many types of woodworking since the failure to weather effectively can result in cracks, splintering, or failure of the entire piece. What is weathering is also a very interesting term because weathering can be done by hand or by machine and it can be done before the wood is stained or painted or before the finish is applied to the wood.

When most people hear what is weathering they automatically think of sanding and buffing their surfaces. In truth what is weathering is much more than that and it is usually referred to as the process of “soaking up” or “soaking up of earth”. This process is very important because earthworms (the worms that eat) are very beneficial to the environment. Earthworms eat small types of decaying organic materials and they produce castings that are very rich in nutrients and can make your garden grow almost twice as fast as if it were not in the process of earth weathering.

There are two types of weathering that people often hear about. One type of what is weathering is the gradual erosion of mountains. The erosion occurs when sediment and rocks are eroded away to the sea. These mountains are gradually losing mass due to gravity and wind erosion and they form lowland channels which provide the rivers and creeks with sediment and boulders to carry away.

Another type of what is weathering is what happens when the earth’s surface is pulled up or out of its niche by the force of wind and the weight of rain. This pulls up rocks and sediments and then the layers of rocks are gradually eroded away to reveal a fresher area. When the weathering process has completely worn away mountains the result is an exposed mountain. When the weathering process on mountains is complete the exposed rock face is left with a dull grey, brown or black colour. The colour of the face on the exposed rocks varies because the exposed areas are constantly being hit by light and the colours change as the light hits the rocks.

There are two other types of what is weathering besides the erosion of mountains and erosion of the earth system. One is what is physical weathering and this is what happens when the weathering is happening on the surface of the earth. This happens at the base of mountains as the weathering removes the carbon dioxide and sulphates from the rocks. The next type of what is weathering is what is called “ecological weathering”. This is what happens at the base of trees as the leaves begin to die off and the tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and sinks into the earth system. It is this process that can have a large part in stabilizing the environment.

The final type of what is weathering is what is called the abrasion weathering process. This is what happens when the surface layer of the rocks is penetrated by sharp edged particles. This is what can take away the most important minerals from the rocks. Rocks can be used to weather in this way but they need to be prepared beforehand. Abrasion can take away much of the moisture from the rocks and so they need to be kept moist when they are put into use.

Weathering is a very useful process in the world as it helps to remove large amounts of minerals from the earth and it can also affect the chemical composition of the rocks. This is because different minerals have different compositions and weathering can affect them through chemical reactions. What is weathering can be done in a number of ways but the main way is to break down the rocks. Many chemicals can be used to achieve this and some stronger ones are ozone and UV rays. When these chemicals come into contact with the rocks they can react with them and create heat and this can remove all the minerals from the rock.

When the rocks have been removed from the ground they can be sold to the highest bidder, or they can be kept by the government in reserves. Where ever they are found, they are valuable because they are a rare example of igneous rock. When what is weathering is done they are able to be identified and their minerals can be extracted. If what is weathering is done correctly then the effects can be good on the earth.
